Description
A color postcard signed by pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) as "Andy Warhol" in blue felt tip pen along the bottom edge. The postcard image is of Andy Warhol's work "100 Cans" (1962), a work created in spray paint, pencil, and casein on cotton currently in the collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York. On the reverse, printed information about the artwork can be found, as well as the stamp "Gallery of Distinction" along the right edge, and a pen inscribed note "Broadway opening, N.Y.C. 1975," which could be when Warhol signed the postcard. Near fine. 4" x 6." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.
Andy Warhol chose a ubiquitous American consumer product, the Campbell's Soup can, to represent how art should be produced in mass quantities and consumed in volume. He created multiple artworks featuring the Campbell's Soup Can, including his "32 Campbell's Soup Cans" (1962), 32 individual canvases each depicting a different flavor of soup, displayed in a group, like in a grocery store aisle.
