Description
A color postcard signed by Austrian Expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) as "Oskar Kokoschka" along the bottom edge. The postcard image is of Kokoschka's "Standing nude with flowers," (ca. 1922), a watercolor in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Printed with provenance information verso. Blank verso. Currently displayed in a mount with decorative corners. Expected surface wear, else near fine. 4.125" x 5.875." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.
Kokoschka's emotive and tumultuous artwork was often a reflection of his surroundings. He lived in Vienna, Berlin, and Prague during the first decades of the twentieth century, when political upheaval was matched by violent dissension in the artistic community; this was the era of splinter artists' groups such as the Vienna Secession, Dresden Secession, Darmstadt Secession, and Neue Secession.
