Description
A fun and colorful large lidded jar with much perfection of art and form.
The heavy and large molded ribbed porcelain jar has been decorated with a garden scene with many children playing games. The body has molded bumps to replicate rivets on a wooden barrel. The lid has matching designs. The lid and jar fit together snugly.
The jar has two pairs of lion heads on each side near the rim. These would originally have had metal handles. The handles are now missing. The lid top would have had a metal finial with a ring for holding the lid but this is also missing.
The shallow foot ring is unglazed and shows a white paste. The lid and mouth flanges are also unglazed. The interiors of lid and jar are glazed, as is the base.
There is an old red paper export label near the mouth rim that is worn and unreadable. There are no other marks or labels.
MEASUREMENTS
7 ¾” (19.7 cm) tall x 6 ½” (16.5 cm) diameter. Weighs 3 lbs 9.9 oz (1640 g)
CONDITION
There are no breaks or cracks. There are two rim chips inside the lid, and a smaller one inside the jar along the flange. The jar and lid have wear to the gilding, lion head handles, as well as a few of the faces and hands on the figures seem pale. There are kiln flaws, such as a few pit, black spots and one glaze imperfection along one of the trees. It looks like a hairline but under magnification is only a glaze imperfection.
As mentioned previously, the metal handles that originally were inserted through the lion heads are missing, as is the metal finial on lid.
The jar has so much going on. I love the lid top design of a little boy with a bow and arrow, who has succeeded in hitting a piece of fruit. His buddies seem quite impressed.
