Item Details
Description
American Sterling Silver Trophy. "Hinata Farm Races", April 24, 1913. Presented By Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Lebus who were the owners of Hinata Farm in Lexington, KY. Hinata became well known known for being the first stable to house and stud Man O' War after his retirement from racing. The trophy belonged to the Camden Family of Kentucky. Measures 5"x5"x11". Approximate Silver Weight 855 grams. PROVENANCE: By descent, Johnson Newlon Camden Jr. (1865-1942). Camden was a United States Senator from Kentucky. His father, Johnson N. Camden, had been a United States Senator from West Virginia. Camden moved to Spring Hill Farm, near Versailles, Kentucky, in 1890 and became involved in farming and Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing. He served for a time as president of the Kentucky Jockey Club. He was appointed as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate on June 16, 1914, to fill a vacancy caused by the death of his predecessor, William O. Bradley. Horse racing in Reconstruction New Orleans was dominated by the Louisiana Jockey Club, which took over operations at the Creole Race Track. The Creole was the old Union track in Gentilly, but that name no doubt was not good for marketing in post-war times. The original Louisiana Jockey Club disbanded in 1879, but was reorganized in 1880. The new club made significant investments in the Fair Grounds, including electric lighting, installed there in 1882.
