Description
Can't get much more Memphis than Michele de Lucchi's 1982 design for the Fortune table! Architectural design, primary shapes, unexpected lines, blue and gray laminate, and painted wood make this a postmodern masterpiece. Can be used as a dining table, console table, or a desk, and it can support a 72 inch piece glass for a table top. (This item doesn't not include a glass top; it is the two pieces of the table's base.) This is a very early example of this table, evident that it is #12 ever produced of the design and that it retains the earliest label that the Memphis Group used.
A member of Studio Alchimia and the Memphis Group, both incredibly important Italian radical avant garde movements in the 1970s and 1980s started by Ettore Sottsass, de Lucchi was a trained architect with projects in Japan, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. He also worked on to projects in furniture, lighting, and interior design, including for Artemide, Alias, Hermès, Alessi, Olivetti, Philips, Siemens, and Vitra. His work is found in the permanent collections of the Neues Museum Berlin, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Triennale di Milano.
In good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, including a few paint loss spots and small nicks on corners of the laminate. Marked with metal Memphis label: "Memphis, Made in Italy, Milano, Michele de Lucchi, 1982, No. 12." Each piece of the base is 32" x 32" x 29" high.
