Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large cutting blade, hand-knapped from a jet-black obsidian stone. The obsidian is flaked into a convex, petaloid shape with a sharp edge encircling the entirety of the blade. Obsidian was a rare and cherished material, traded hundreds of miles from volcanic sources in the Sierra Madre mountains to the south. This obsidian is a very generous size, and such blades may have been for ritualistic use. Size: 5.3" L x 2" W (13.5 cm x 5.1 cm)
