Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. 1940s CE. A lovely pair of vintage earrings comprised of hand-worked sterling silver with turquoise stones. Both are hammered into a triangular bezel surrounded by a rope twist border and engraved linear motifs. The generous turquoise stone is polished and has nice areas of shimmering copper inclusions. A trumpet shaped squash blossom with flared petals projects from the lower part of the bezel. The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead literally means "bead that spreads out" and this floral form first appeared about 1880 as a symbol of the revered squash. A wonderful and wearable example of fine Navajo artistry! Size: 3" L x 1" W (7.6 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 94.5%; total weight: 17.6 grams

Provenance: private Niwot, Colorado, USA collection
