Description
Hiroshi Sugimoto (1948) is a Japanese photographer and architect. He leads the Tokyo-based architectural firm New Material Research Laboratory. Sugimoto understood that early twentieth century modernism was a watershed moment in cultural history, a stripping away of superfluous decoration. He set out to trace the beginnings of modernism via architecture. He pushed the focal length on his large format camera to twice infinity, and with no stops on the bellows rail and the view through the lens was an utter blur. He discovered that superlative architecture survives the onslaught of blurred photography. In this series he began erosion testing architecture for durability, visually melting away many of the lesser buildings in the process.
