Description
A rare high-relief-molded white porcelain snuff bottle
Daoguang mark and possibly of the period
Of oviform shape, the bottle with molded and applied decoration in very high relief naturalistically depicting a crane standing on one leg amidst the branches of pine tree, the needle groupings and branches reaching around to the reverse side of the bottle with a four-character molded seal mark in a line to the base.
2 5/8in (6.6cm) high, stopper
Footnotes:
或為清道光 白瓷模刻松下仙鶴圖鼻煙壺
This bottle features a crane and pine tree in a continuous scene that wraps around the bottle. The molding is in unusually high relief as the tree and bird are raised well above the surface of the bottle itself in some places. Molded porcelain produced by artists at the Jingdezhen kilns were popular during the Daoguang period. A similar high relief 'crane and pine' molded porcelain bottle with an inscription by Wang Bingrong was sold at Sothebys New York, March 23rd and 24th, 1998, lot 103; and a similarly plump crane is found on a bottle signed by Chen Guozhi illustrated by Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, The J & J Collection, Vol. 1, 1993, p. 416-417, no. 249.
For another bottle signed by Chen Guozhi, see the following lot 683 in this sale.
