Description
[World War I] Fabric from Captain Manfred von Richthofen's Fokker Dr. 1 Triplane. Fabric measures approximately 2.5" x 1.5" and maintains the signature color of the Red Baron's infamous triplane. Included is a letter of provenance from P.J. Carisella, author of Who Killed the Red Baron, a paperback copy and a postcard. According to the letter, this fabric was removed from Richthofen's death plane by Air Mechanic C.C. Collins of No. 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corp. "Mr. Collins is officially recorded in Australian Army Records and No. 3 Squadron records as being one of two men... that crawled out under enemy fire to tie a rope around the body of Richthofen and the Fokker Dr. 1 425/17 triplane". Fabric has some scratching throughout with color loss as expected. A real treat for World War I and aviation collectors alike.
