(Paramount, 1966-69) An original extensively hand-annotated master script for the Star Trek: The Original Series first pilot episode, The Cage. Brad-bound in special Star Trek studio covers, the upper right corner of which is marked in felt pen, "Original," the 67-page script by series creator Gene Roddenberry is hand-dated "9/22/64" (the hand-written date "9/21/64" has been crossed out). An important genesis document for the most influential sci-fi series in pop culture history, this script is a drastic revision of the Second Revised Final Draft (dated 9/20/64) and consists of original typed rough draft pages dated 9/21/64 and 9/22/64, complete with x'd out and typed-over sections, hand corrections, and additional handwritten elaboration; undated mimeo pages, all of which are hand annotated, most with consequential revision in the form of alterations to stage directions, line redactions, dialog changes, additions, and omissions, and scene renumbering; and inserted pages Frankenstein'd from stapled-together snippets of mimeo pages with additional hand-written content. The mark-ups were either done by Gene Roddenberry, himself, or under direct consultation from the sci-fi visionary, and as such, provide unique in-depth insights into his creative process and the evolution of his conception of the characters and the series. At this stage, the captain of the Enterprise is still named "Robert April" and the script refers to Rigel 113 rather than Rigel VII, Dr. Boyce is still merely "ship's doctor," and a Renaissance Bedroom is included on the set list, which disappears from subsequent drafts. The Cage would undergo further revisions before cameras rolled on November 27, 1964, but few surviving artifacts from production chronicle the process and scope of a painstaking overhaul and meticulous revision like the master script offered here. Measuring 11"x8.5", the piece is in good condition with foxing to the edges of the cover, head, foot, and fore-edge, and some spot staining to the interior pages from the revision process. A major discovery of the utmost significance for any institution, Trek collector, or pop culture scholar, this remarkable and important document has never before been offered for public sale.
