Description

Grett Friedman (American, 20th c). "Mobius Strip" copper sculpture, 1998. Signed "G.F." and dated 1998 at a lower edge of the mobius strip. An elegant, free-standing copper sculpture representing a Mobius strip by artist Grett Friedman. A Mobius strip is "a surface with one continuous side formed by joining the ends of a rectangular strip after twisting one end through 180 degrees" (Oxford Languages). Friedman beautifully captures the sinuous twists and turns of this loop, which is perched upon a pyramidal base. The smooth surface presents with an attractive blue-green patina. The design of the Mobius Strip symbolizes unity and non duality, as the two sides - referred to as inside and outside - are joined and become one side. The Mobius strip was discovered by German mathematicians Johanne Benedict Listing and August Mobius in 1858, and this one-sided, non-orientable strip has fascinated artists, mathematicians, and engineers ever since. Size: 12.375" W at widest point x 23.375" H (including attached pedestal) (31.4 cm x 59.4 cm)

Grett Friedman earned her degree in Fine and Applied Art from Skidmore College and studied privately with sculptor Max Kalish (1891-1945). In addition, Friedman completed post-graduate study in sculpture and ceramics at the Cleveland Institute with honors. Friedman is a founding member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists as well as a member of the New Mexico Potters' Association and the New Mexico Sculptors' Guild. The following is her artist's statement: "There is no mystical, hidden meaning in my work. I leave the interpretation to the viewer. I have a direction in mind but I let the material tell me what to do. I like that spontaneity."

Condition

Sculpture is in overall excellent condition. It is signed "G.F." and dated 1998 at a lower edge of the mobius strip. The copper alloy has developed a lovely blue-green patina over time.
