Description
Made in America, circa 1900 by an unknown manufacturer, the “Schley” bank was based off of the skirmish between the U.S. and Spain during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. On July 3, 1898, Commander of Spain’s Cuba Squadron, Admiral Pascual Cervera, attempted to break out of the U.S. blockade on the southern coast of Cuba. Four cruisers and two destroyers steamed out of Santiago de Cuba, quickly pursued by U.S. Commodore Winfield Schley aboard the USS Brooklyn. U.S. Naval forces swiftly overcame the Spanish fleet, “bottling them up” as the bank indicates with its bottle-form shape and phrasing. Coin is deposited into slot and to reset, give the bank a quick jerk to the left. 4.75"h x 3.5"w x 2.5"d
