Description
The "Holly Edition", limited to 1000 sets. 8vo, 40 vols., in half red morocco with gilt-decorated leather spines bound by Whitman Bennett, N.Y., portraits and other illustrations throughout set, with title tissue guards. Published by G.P. Putnam & Sons, New York. First volume has been rebound to include a diplomatic pass for Henry Cheeseborough, American delegate to Paris, as he traveled from Calais to Dieppe. Pass is dated September 27th, 1830, and is signed by Irving for himself and for American Minister Louis McLane, whom Irving served as aide-de-campe from 1829 to 1831.
