Description
[South America]
JAILLOT, Hubert (1632-1712), After SANSON, Nicolas (1600-1667).
Amerique Meridionale divisee en ses Principales Parties...Presentee a Monseigneur le Dauphin...
Engraved map with original hand color in part.
Paris: Jaillot, 1692.
25 1/8" x 38 1/8" sheet.
Extremely fine map of South America showing the mythical city of El Dorado and mythical Lake Parime. The continent is divided into the French, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch possessions. The fourteen coastal Capitaineries created by the Portuguese are outlined in Brazil. The course of the Amazon is delineated in a fairly accurate manner, yet it shows the river's source in a fascinating, interlacing maze of waterways.
