As featured in "Mr. Jefferson's Telescope, A History of the University of VIrginia in 100 Objects" by Brendan Wolfe, University of Virginia Press, 2017; a 1910 medal for the High Jump, University of Virginia Vs. John Hopkins, issued by the General Athletic Association at UVA. The medal is prized for the phoenix on its face. According to a 2014 article in the University of Virginia Magazine, which featured this medal, UVA collectors believe the phoenix, "a symbol of renewal, rising from its own ashes--became the University's icon for several decades following the Rotunda fire in 1895," and note that other UVA items from the era bear the same symbol. Gold filled, with enamel, with gold and blue ribbon. Medal marked for Dieges & Clust, Philadelphia. From an important private University of Virginia collection. Approx. 1 1/4" diameter.
