Description
American. 1890s. Painted cast iron. A cast iron mechanical bank with a bird feeding its young, manufactured by J. E. Stevens, patent date January 23, 1883. Place a coin in the bird's mouth, press the lever and the bird leans towards the nest, while the fledglings open their mouths and the coin is deposited. Note the yellow hedgehog poking his head out from under the brush. Late 19th century. 6 x 8 x 4.5". Surface exhibits toning and minor to moderate losses, mainly from the high points and edges.
