Item Details
Description
Northwestern Europe, England, London, ca. 18th century CE. A fine high quality (90% to 96%) silver sugar caster made by the silversmith Johnathan Newton in the Queen Anne style. This caster rests on a pedestal foot that is stamped with the maker mark "JN" in script, city, and silver purity marks. The vessel has a carinated body, an elongated neck, and a domed lid lined with perforations. The perforations are ornately cut to form dots and scrolling motifs. A tiered finial knob completes the luxurious caster. Casters were symbols of wealth, since blocks of sugar needed to be ground if one wanted to sprinkle the granules, which would require a servant. Size: 3" Diameter x 7.5" H (7.6 cm x 19 cm); quality of silver: 90% to 96%; weight: 231.5 grams

Provenance: private J. P. collection, Rye, Colorado, USA; ex-Bill Buffinger collection, Hollywood, California, USA, purchased February 25, 1998; ex-Argentum, San Francisco, California, USA
