Fossilized Polish Kowala Brachiopod Colony on Shale
Fossilized Polish Kowala Brachiopod Colony on Shale
Item Details
Description
Ancient Seas, Eastern Europe, Poland, Holy Cross Mountains, Kowala Formation, Middle Devonian period (Givetian), ca. 387.7 to 382.7 million years ago. A large shale matrix containing sizable brachiopod fossils assembled across the surface. These are wonderfully preserved and three-dimensional examples of Schizophoria and Mucrospirifer brachiopods complete with both valves closed and intact. These brachiopods have been carefully extracted, cleaned, then arranged as a colony on a stone slab, much as how they would have been grouped underwater! With most brachiopod fossils found measuring less than 0.25 inches (0.635 cm) across, these brachiopods measure 3 to 5 times that size! Size of matrix: 10.5" L x 10" W (26.7 cm x 25.4 cm); brachiopods: 1.3" W (3.3 cm) to 0.8" W (2 cm)

This species of Schizophoria, of the middle Devonian era, is found in the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. These mountains are a site dating back to the time of the world's oldest tetrapod footprints ever found - fossil evidence of the first existence of four-legged vertebrates walking on land. This is a large and very impressive display specimen of Devonian brachiopods, noteworthy for their famous scientific site in paleontology!
