Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 25th to 26th Dynasty, ca. 747 to 525 BCE. A beautiful cedar wood panel of a trapezoidal form that was at one time comprised part of a canopic box meant to hold the remains of a mummified animal offering. Centered on the front of the panel is a left-facing depiction of Anubis - the jackal-headed god of the dead and the process of embalming - holding a petite offering cup in one hand and a length of linen wrapping in the other. Vertical stripes of red and Egyptian blue pigment flank a pair of inscribed hieroglyph columns on a darkened cream ground, with horizontal stripes beneath the canine deity, and a solid red band on top. Above Anubis' head is his name in hieroglyphs - albeit missing the bird glyph in the middle. When translated, the vertical hieroglyphs read, "Words to be recited by Anubis, who is in the mummy wrappings chamber, lord of the sacred land. The Osiris, 'nfrt-jw,' the justified. Bast comes to me, bearing linen and clothing…" Size: 8.125" W x 7.8" H (20.6 cm x 19.8 cm)

Condition
Verso is sealed with maroon-hued pigment for preservation. Areas of painted gesso are loose against the wood. Small areas of painted gesso reattached to wooden surfaces, mostly on lower left corner and bottom periphery but also along one small area of left hieroglyph column. Chips and nicks to painted gesso, wooden peripheries, and verso, with damage to remaining dowels, and fading as well as darkening to pigment in scattered areas. Great preservation to painted gesso, hieroglyphs, and pigment. Nice patina to wood in exposed areas.
