Description
Featured in this lot is this original South African, San etched ostrich egg water vessel. The egg shows a simple but elegant etching to the outside of the egg and shows a spill hole seen on the top of the egg. The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are members of various Khoe, Tuu, or Kx'a-speaking indigenous hunter-gatherer groups that are the first nations of Southern Africa, and whose territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa. The San people would make water vessels from emptied ostrich eggs. The condition of this ostrich egg is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this ostrich egg are 6 3/4" x 5" x 5".
