Item Details
Description
Featured in this lot is this double woven Rivercane basket dyed with Walnut and Bloodroot and from Cherokee weaver Eva Wolf (1922-2004), circa 1968. Eva Wolfe was a very famous basket weaver from North Carolina, a part of the Cherokee tribe, and a master of the art of traditional type of Cherokee double weave basketry. To construct these baskets, Wolfe and her husband would travel eighty miles each April to find and harvest suitable Rivercane; some baskets could include as many as 120 cane split in four strips to construct one basket. In 1968, Eva Wolfe was awarded with first place in an exhibition sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The basket comes complete with a First Place ribbon from the Cherokee Indian Fall Festival and features a tag with an authentic U.S. Department of the Interior Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual Inc. tag. The condition of this double woven basket is pristine, with a wonderful tight weave and no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this storage basket are 15" x 12" x 11 1/2". A piece of this caliber from circa 1970's would be worth $12,000.00 today; a similar basket from the same weaver sold for $14,000.00 from Brunk Auctions.
