Description
"Ba'al Shem Tov" Hanukkah Lamp. Silver and Silver Gilt. Ukraine, 19th C. Dimensions: 25x30 cm.
Filigree Hanukkah lamps of this type are known as "Ba'al Shem Tov Lamps" due to their originating in the town where Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer – the holy "Ba'al Shem Tov", founder of Hasidism in Eastern Europe in the 18th century, resided. They were designed in the shape of an extravagant couch or bench carried on six thin legs and were decorated throughout with intricate filigree designs made from thin silver wires. Their pitcher-shaped oil containers stand upon a removable shelf.
The lamp's backplate and crown are made of gilt silver.
The crown at the lamp's top is supported on the antlers of two silver stags.
Beneath the stags the silversmith placed a type of silver Torah Ark with two filigree doors. A small silver hand holds the handle of one of the doors.
Dense and ornate filigree work of the mid-19th C.
A classic and important collector's piece, authentic and beautiful.
