American, early 19th century. Certificate awarded to John Barnes, medical student for practice under Pennsylvania Hospital Physicians, dated February 29th, 1812, with etching above of the South Front of the hospital, subtitled below: "This Building by the bounty of Government and of many private Persons was piously founded for the Relief of the Sick and Miserable, Anno. 1755. Pennsylvania Hospital is credited as the nation's first hospital, founded in part by Benjamin Franklin. Certificate is matted, set behind glass with a wooden and gilt frame.
