1839-1892, "A Poem about a Broken Bucket" and "Reflected Moonlight", image areas 9 1/2" X 14 1/2", plus mattting and frames.....BiographyYoshitoshi Tsukioka (Taiso) was the dominating ukiyo-e designer of the Meiji period. He is best known for the series of 100 Aspect of the Moon. Yoshitoshi was born on April 30, 1839 (died 1892). The given name of Yoshitoshi was Yonejiro. At the age of eleven Yoshitoshi became a student of the school of Kuniyoshi Utagawa, the great artist of ukiyo-e. One of his school class mates was Yoshiiku who bullied the younger Yoshitoshi. The rivalry and hostility should continue for the rest of their lives. At the age of fourteen, Yoshitoshi (Taiso) Tsukioka composed his first woodblock print - a triptych of the naval battle of Dan-no-ura in which the Minamoto clan destroyed the forces of the Taira clan in 1185. The same year, in 1853, US Commodore Perry arrived with a fleet of battle ships and forced the opening of Japan to the West.
