Description
Black History
c. 1900 Large Color Chromolithograph of a 19th Century Southern Tobacco Operation with Slaves & Master with Whip
c. 1900 Color Chromolithograph of a Southern Tobacco Operation during the mid 19th century, Extremely Fine.
A tremendous Chromolithograph for display which measures about 22.5" x 32.75 and shows a White Master, his whip in hand and a fearsome dog at his side, gesturing to a Black Slave who is balancing two baskets on a beam across his shoulders. In the background, other Slaves carry cut tobacco from the field while others carry bales of either tobacco or cotton to a waiting sailing ship loading at dock. A "specimen" plant of tobacco dominates the left side of the lithograph, presenting the viewer with a close-up view of the anatomy of the "Nicotiana tabacum" plant. The paper is slightly toned and there is a waterstain well hidden at the base of the tobacco plant at lower left, yet the colors are rich and vibrant. For preservation purposes, this lithograph has been silked on its blank back. With a framing, this presentation of historic Black History will make a museum-quality item for display.
