Robert E. Lee Clipped Signature Overseeing Mississippi River Engineering
Small slip measuring 7.875" x 2.25", Ohio, dated 1838. A clipped signature from a larger document "For the Improvement of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER, above the Mouth of the Ohio". Signed "RE Lee Capt Engrs" to certify the receipt of goods and sent to C.D. Brown. The slip has uneven edges, with chipping and small tears at the edges. Toning and dampstaining along the top edge. Clear signature. Lee served as an assistant in the chief engineer's office in Washington, D.C. from 1834 to 1837, but spent the summer of 1835 helping to lay out the state line between Ohio and Michigan, and in 1837 he oversaw the engineering work for the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
