Henry Moore Bronze Sculpture of Woman, with Henry Moore Foundation Provenance

A table top-sized bronze sculpture by British modern artist Henry Moore (1898-1986) entitled "Woman," 8/9, ca. 1961. The sculpture depicts an amorphous female form atop an oblong plinth. Signed in stone as "Moore" and inscribed in stone as "8/9" along the edge of one of the sides of the base. The Henry Moore Foundation lists this piece as LH488, cast 8/9, and confirmed that it was cast by the Fiorini Foundry of London, England. Expected light wear, else near fine. The sculpture measures approximately 7" wide by 7.25" high x 4.125" deep, the plinth alone measuring 5" x 4.125" x .5." Accompanied by extensive provenance information to be further elaborated below.

Henry Moore studied art and later taught art at the Royal College of Art in London after 1921. Moore enjoyed major critical and commercial success in postwar Britain, exploring such themes as the human form (as certainly on display here with "Woman.") Art historians have theorized that Moore's use of characteristically round forms--also evidenced with "Woman"--convey a sense of optimism in the modern world.

The Henry Moore Foundation was established by the artist and his family in 1977 to cultivate an appreciation of the arts through financial support, exhibitions, study, and research. Today, you can visit the Henry Moore Studio and Gardens in Hertfordshire, England or the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, England.

The Fiorini Foundry, now affiliated with Arts Heritage Ltd. Co., was founded in 1909 by Giovanni Fiorini. Its use of the lost wax casting technique enables a fine level of detail to be conveyed in the finished sculpture.

Email correspondence from Diana Flatto of the Henry Moore Foundation from January 2018 confirming that "the images and dimensions supplied [of this casting of 'Woman'] tie in with the work recorded in the Foundation's archives and illustrated in the Lund Humphries publication 'Henry Moore Complete Sculpture, Volume 3, 1955-1964,' edited by Alan Bowness, 1986." Note that though this is not an official statement of authenticity on the part of the Henry Moore Foundation, it provides strong and promising evidence that the sculpture was executed by Moore.

2. A print-out of the catalogue information for "Woman" (catalogue number LH 488) from the Henry Moore Foundation.

3. An invitation from the Henry Moore Foundation to submit information about this casting of the sculpture to their database.

4. Consignment information from Swann Auction Galleries (New York, New York) dating from January - March 2018.

5. An art invoice from Rosenthal & Rosenthal, Inc. (New York, New York) dated May 1, 2007 showing that this Henry Moore sculpture was purchased for $15,000.
