CF. David Roberts traveled the distance of the Nile from lower to upper Egypt in 1837/38, sketching the monuments and displaced statuary along the Nile. Upon his return to London in 1839, he began to create detailed watercolors from his sketches. These watercolors were used by Louis Haghe to generate a series of eighty-five Egyptian subject lithographs, published in 1848–1849. Roberts renowned images shaped how Europeans saw the region and his choice of this subject undoubtedly contributed to the beginnings of the 19th century preservation of these monuments.
