30 volumes comprising the complete run of the periodical from 1846 to 1875. Profusely illustrated with many volumes after the first including engraved frontispieces, volume title pages, and issue headpieces, plus numerous engravings from botanical drawings, architectural designs, and landscapes throughout the text. (8vo) 23.1x16.1 cm (9¼x6½"), modern white buckram, black spine labels lettered in gilt.

The Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste; a monthly magazine on "horticulture, landscape gardening, rural architecture, embellishments, pomology, floriculture, and all subjects of rural life, literature, art, and taste". Founded by A. J. Downing, the famous landscape designer, horticulturist, and journalist in 1846 and edited it until his tragic death in 1852. Afterward, there were several different editors, including Patrick Barry, John Jay Smith, and Henry T. Williams. In 1875 the Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste was merged with The Gardener's Monthly and Horticultural Advertiser and published from 1876 to 1888 under the title The Gardener's Monthly and Horticulturist. This collection represents a complete run until the 1875 merger. Ex-libris of Cambridge Public Library, with stamps and ink inscription "From Susan D. Nickerson, March 24, 1890." on verso of title pages plus numerous blind stamps and catalog numbers written on title pages in ink and pencil.
