Description
A very old delicate lamp shade with hand painted silk panels in a dark wood frame that has a delicate fretwork carving. The four sided square shade has delicate hand painted silk panels attached to a softwood frame. The panels show scenes of scholar life in ancient China, painted with reds, greens, blue and gray.
The frame was stained a dark color. Inside the lamp you can see the much lighter shade wood where it is not stained. There is cut out fret work on the top and bottom of each wood panel that look like a stylized shou symbols. There are iron loops on four of the wood post ends to suspend the shade.
MEASUREMENTS
8” (20.3 cm) wide x 8” (20.3 cm) deep x 8 ½” (21.6 cm) tall. Weighs 12.3 oz (350 g)
CONDITION
The frame is in quite good condition, especially considering the age. The only significant damage to the frame is one corner that was glued to keep it together. The repair isn’t very noticeable on the outside, but you can see glue on the inside (see circled area in the photos).
The silk is a very old and delicate, and each of the four silk panels have holes and tears. One panel is more damaged and is more faded than the others. The colors of the paintings are still fairly bright.
This is a wonderful old, rare shade that could be restored. It’s amazing that such a delicate object has survived so well after many years of use.
