Description

Title: Victorian Silver Plate Pickle Castor with Amethyst Glass

Size: 10 ½Â” (26.7 cm) tall x 4 ¾Â” (12.1 cm) wide x 3Â” (7.6 cm) deep.

Description: A handblown ribbed amethyst glass cylinder sits in an elaborate Aesthetic Movement silver plate holder.

The heavy metal frame boasts not just one hook at the side but another under the finial. IÂ’m thinking you could use the one by the finial to hold the tongs when the glass was out of the holder. Alternatively, the second hook might be to hold the lid while youÂ’re removing a pickle.

The frame has a repousse band at the base and an elaborate final with a floral motif. The holder rests on four elaborate feet. The jar is handblown and has a polished pontil mark on the base. The glass is amethyst colored with slight ribbing, and bubbles visible. It has some wear scratches from the metal. The jar rests tightly in the holder, and the lid fits the jar well. The lid has a ribbed finial and edge. A pair of tongs with chicken feet completes the set.

A mark on the base reads Â“ROGERS SILVER CO TAUNTON MASS. QUADRUPLEPLATE. Â“This encircles a crown.

MEASUREMENTS

10 ½Â” (26.7 cm) tall x 4 ¾Â” (12.1 cm) wide x 3Â” (7.6 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 7.0 oz (655 g)

CONDITION

There are no dents, cracks, or breaks. There are silver losses on the frame, lid, and tongs but it still has some shine left. The edge of the lid is rough and doesnÂ’t fit the jar snugly; it may be a marriage. It looks good though. The caster rests flat on a surface, without wobbling.

The amethyst glass has such a rich color, especially when set in a window. It looks beautiful with the silver plate.
