Description
This early 19th century mahogany secretaire abattant was made in New York, circa 1810. The secretary features a top drawer above the fall front desk which, when opened, reveals a leather embossed writing surface with five visible drawers and two secret drawers made of tulipwood. Below the desktop is an additional locking storage cabinet. The keys are original and when turned once, locks the secretary desk; when turned a second time, locks the drawer above. The secretary also contains its original retail stamp (image 9) showing its purchase in Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston Stamp is behind the fitted interior of the desk. The interior must be removed to see the stamp.
