BURROUGHS, John (1837–1921). The Writings of… Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1905. 14 volumes complete as issued (nine volumes were later published bringing the total to 23 volumes), 8vo. Numerous photogravures and engravings including frontispieces. Original half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine stamped with vines of three–leaf clovers, top edge gilt (spines sunned, boards faintly rubbed). Provenance: P. G. Gates (signature in each volume). Riverby Edition, EACH VOLUME SIGNED BY BURROUGHS on the half–title. A unique set unseen on the market with the author’s signature in every volume. Peter G. Gates was one of Arkansas’ best known yellow pine manufacturers and one of the most expert woodsman and estimators in the Southwest as he was known to have “spent many weeks in the woods, much of the time of foot” (American Lumberman 1905, pp. 403–406). His affinity for nature probably attracted that of Mr. Burroughs who was an American naturalist and nature essayist capturing his own unique perceptions of the natural world.
