Description
[CLAY, Henry (1777–1852)]. –– NEAGLE, John, artist (American, 1796–1865). Henry Clay. Philadelphia: W.B. Lane, 1844. Mezzotint engraving (568 x 419 mm). Porthole portrait by William Warner after the painting from life by Nagle at Ashland in November, 1852 that is unquestionably a reference to Rembrandt Peale’s famous portrait of George Washington. Linen–backed. Restored paper losses and tears in margins; scattered repaired stains and soiling around edges, with some abrasions in image, but overall a strong and dark impression.
