Description
"Faust. A Tragedy" (Part I) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in a Modern Translation by Alice Raphael, illustrated with 18 lithographs by Eugene Delacroix, published by The Heritage Press, 1959. Delacroix's lithographs were redrawn on lithographic stone in reduced size and printed by Fernand Mourlot, Paris. The edition was designed by Ernest Ingham and printed under his direction at The Fanfare Press, London.
The Alice Raphael's translation is done in a way to preserve the poetic nature of the text while avoiding the usual pitfalls of obscuring the meaning with stilted English.
Faust's struggle between head and heart, belief and unbelief, striving and erring, are major themes relevant today. Major characters include God and the Devil as they 'struggle' over the immortal soul of Faust.
Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. In contrast to the Neoclassical perfectionism of his chief rival Ingres, Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens and painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant emphasis on color and movement rather than clarity of outline and carefully modelled form. Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, Walter Scott and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
