Beautiful original Japanese WWII sword made by Kataoka Kunihiro
Gifu Seki on Honshu Island in Japan made in WWII 1940.
The blade is signed “Kataoka Kunihiro 片 岡 国 廣” with 関 inspection stamp,
shinogi-zukuri shape, WWll time period made blade. There are small scratches on the blade that will undoubtedly have happened when the sword was used in war time
Kanehiro lived in Gifu prefecture, made swords during WWll time and after the war as a Gendai smith,
listed in John Slough`s book page 218.
The blade is traditional hand forged, in old polish.
Kataoka Kunihiro was regarded as a Rikugun Jumei Tosho Swordsmith meaning Army Certified Swordsmith.
To become Rikugun Jumei Tosho, a swordsmith had to pass tests and examination of his blades.
Once accepted as an Army Certified Swordsmith (Rikugun Jumei Tosho),
the smith was given a regular allocation of tamehagane with which to make sword blades.
Jumei Tosho smiths also made blades using non-traditional materials, mainly forged mill steel made in the traditional manner.
A complete list of Rikugun Jumei Tosho swordsmiths was published in Showa 17 entitled “Rikugun Jumei Tosho Meibo”.
