This lot consists of an unframed watercolor illustration on paper, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). "H. Matisse" is inscribed at lower right corner. Image depicts the figure of a woman, done all in brilliant blue. This elegant piece is a perfect example of the understated style for which Matisse was so well known. Overall unframed dimensions approximately 9.5" x 7.5".
Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
