Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the Fauvist style of Lodewijk Schelfhout (Dutch, 1881-1943). Image depicts a tropical landscape that is ripe with color and movement. Deep, jewel toned mountains flatten into a vibrant plain of greens and yellows. A hand-painted inscription at lower right corner reads, "L. Schelfhout 1918". This piece would be a fine addition to any collection. Overall measurements approximately 21.5" x 31.5".
Reverse side of canvas shows evidence of a past repair (top left corner).
Lodewijk Schelfhout (Dutch, 1881-1943) was the grandson of famed Romantic painter, Andreas Schelfhout (Dutch, 1787-1870). Lodewijk Schelfhout's mother, Anne Maria Picnot (British, 1851-1930) is best known as the designer of the christening dress worn by Princess Wilhemina of the Netherlands. As a young man, Lodewijk Schelfhout moved to Germany and worked as a house painter by day and a musician by night. Upon his return to the Netherlands, Schelfhout worked as an artist's apprentice and then moved to the artsy Parisian neighborhood of Montparnasse. Schelfhout's work in the first decade of the 20th century was ultra-modern for its time, fusing Cubism and Fauvism in brilliant, kaleidoscopic landscape pieces.
