Description
This lot consists of an unframed mixed media (gouache and watercolor) drawing on paper, done in the bold style of modern painter Fernand Leger (French, 1881-1955). "F. Leger" is inscribed by hand at bottom right of composition. This unframed piece measures approximately 7.25" x 8.75".
Thin lines harmoniously weave and overlap to create the suggestion of these two rotund female figures. An intimate jumble of modernized shapes and vivid blue color. Presumably a sketch from life, or a study for a larger piece. Crisp, refreshing, and dynamic, this lot would make a fine addition to any collection.
Fernand Leger (French, 1881-1955) was a painter, sculptor, and filmmaker who emerged as one of the major Cubist painters of the early 20th century. Leger originally studied to become a photograph re-toucher and an architectural draftsman, but, around the turn of the century, his attention inevitably turned toward painting. Initially inspired by Paul Cezanne's exhibits at the Salon d'Automne, Leger began to explore geometric stylization. Later, swept up by the fervor of Cubism spurred on by the likes of Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963), Fernand Leger was able to step into his full potential as a visionary and highly conceptual painter. In 1945, Leger reflected that "the object in modern painting must become the main character and overthrow the subject. If, in turn, the human form becomes an object, it can considerably liberate possibilities for the modern artist."
