Description
This lot consists of a mixed media (gouache and paper) collage on what appears to be cardboard or cardboard paper, executed in the figurative style of modern artist Yoshitomo Nara (Japanese, 1959 - ) and framed under glass. Piece is hand inscribed at lower right and dated "99". Image depicts a figurative rendering of a wide-eyed child holding two drumsticks in their tiny hands. Light, sweet, and not over-complicated -- a visually refreshing addition to any collection. Framed dimensions approximately 27.75" x 18".
Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label and a black ink stamp at bottom.
Using a style combining the effect of Japanese prints and Pop Art cartoons, he paints solitary, doll-like children to comment upon the decline of society, East and West. To Nara, children symbolize a world marked by confusion and anxiety about an unknown future. Since 1988, he has divided his time between Japan and Germany, where he studied art. He sees himself as a voluntary exile. Because art schools and museums were conservative in Japan, Nara, also a sculptor working in a similarly simplistic style, studied contemporary art on his own there as a young man, eventually seeking exhibitions abroad.
