Description
"The Works of Alexander Pope. New Edition Including Several Hundred Unpublished Letters and Other New Materials\". Collected in Part by the late Rt. Hon. J.W. Croker. With introduction and notes by W. Elwin and W.J. Courthope, Including "The Life of Pope" by W. J. Courthope. With Portraits and other Illustrations.
Complete in ten volumes. Published by Gordian Press, New York, 1967. Reprint of the 1871 Edition. [the single volumes were edited and published between 1871 and 1889].
In the 146-page long Introduction (vol. 1), the editor, Whitwell Elwin, explains the history of the Pope's editions. Particularly, he explains the issues with the Warburton's and Warton's editions, while the Roscoe edition of 1824 was "justly considered by Mr. Croker to be the worst." Citing memoirs and Pope's correspondence, Elwin argues that Pope provided so many contradictory statements in regards of versions and explanations of his works, that absolute definitive edition would be impossible, therefore different interpretations and version will remain the part of Pope's oeuvre.
