Description
15th-16th century AD. A group of tools comprising: an iron hammer; an iron socketted conical spear butt or siege engine bolt and an iron side-axe. See the Guttmann collection nos. AG60 or AG101, for a similar spear butt. 1.1 kg total, 10.5-21.2cm (4 - 8 1/4"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. The massive spear butt could be related to a 16th century pike, but we cannot exclude that it is a siege engine bolt, usually called quadrellone da breccia i.e. a sturdy and sharp iron point, generally square or conical in section, in use until the 16th century, which could have been mounted on a short shaft, to be used as a pike or to be cast as a verrettone.
