Description
9th century AD or later. A restrung necklace composed of a variety of glass beads, barrel-shaped, fluted and spherical of clear or opaque glass, some multi-coloured, with three small bronze crosses. See a similar necklace without crosses in Politikens Forlag. Jeg ser på oldsager (I look at antiquities), Kopenhagen, 1966, no.830. 25 grams, 40cm (15 3/4"). Property of an East Sussex, UK, teacher; previously with a Dorset, UK, collector since 1998. The beads forming these necklaces were done either by fusing a strip of glass of a different colour, or by composing the different coloured glass masses while hot, into long rods, which were then broken into pieces. It is a technique that is still in use during modern times. [No Reserve]
