Description
Signed March 15th, 1866 by John O'Mahony, agent for the Irish Republic . Three vignettes, lithography by Continental Bank Note of New York. 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Rare scrip, basically currency. John Francis O'Mahony (1815 [x=#8211/] 1877) was a Gaelic scholar and the founding member of the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States, sister organization to the Irish Republican Brotherhood. O'Mahony came to the United States in 1858 and founded the Fenian Brotherhood. O'Mahony's presidency over the Fenian Brotherhood was being increasingly challenged by William R. Roberts. Both Fenian factions raised money by the issue of bonds in the name of the "Irish Republic", which were bought by the faithful in the expectation of their being honoured when Ireland should be "A Nation Once Again". These bonds were to be redeemed "six months after the recognition of the independence of Ireland". Hundreds of thousands of Irish immigrants subscribed.Date: 1866Country (if not USA): IrelandState: City: Provenance: Ken Prag Collection
