Under King Henry VII rule the first double gold sovereign coin was struck in 1485. Due to its large size and weight it was not practical to use it for. It was only used for presentation purposes. Many feel that it was intended to be a treble sovereign. This double sovereign was also struck during the rule of Edward VI in 1553 however was not used for circulation.
The modern gold double sovereigns were minted only in 1820 and they were also known as two pound gold coins. The design is similar to that of modern sovereigns. The obverse of the coin features the reigning monarch’s bust portrait for a particular period and the reverse usually features the iconic design by the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon. The 1820 coins were only proof pattern coins.
In 1823 an ordinary version for circulation was also struck and was a popular coin. A proof only version which was not intended for circulation was minted in 1826 for George IV as part of the coronation proof set. In 1831 a proof-only version was struck for King William IV.
All of these above dated coins are very rare.
No double sovereign coins were struck bearing Queen Victoria young head design. However on occasion of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee celebration. The Jubilee Head double gold sovereign coins were produced in both versions; the proof-only version and for the second time was struck in the normal circulation version.
Again in 1893 to mark the change to the Old Head coin issues the Old Head double sovereign coins were struck in proof version as well as for normal circulation version.
In 1902 both proof and circulation versions were minted for King Edward VII. A small quantity of proof versions were minted at Sydney Mint which are very rare. After this the future issues were not used for circulation.
To mark King George V’s coronation in 1911 double sovereign proof coin sets were issued. Double sovereign pattern coinage only was issued for King Edward VIII. No British coins bearing his portrait were issued not even for collectors.
In 1937 to mark King George VI’s coronation double gold sovereign proof set coins were issued.
In 1953 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation proof sets coins were issued but contained denominations from the crown down to farthing. Although gold coin specimens were produced none were issued even for collectors.
In 1971 a department was created at Royal Mint which produced packaged and marketed coins for collectors. In 1980 once again two pound double sovereign production was started and since then it is produced almost every year often only in proof versions.
Most of the double sovereign coins have limited mintage and they are very rare. Their rarity age design content and historical significance have made them a desirable coin for collectors as well as investors.
