Description
Sir George Clausen (1852-1944) Potrait Oil/ Panel Signed and Dated , measures 11.5 x 15 inchesSir George Clausen was an English artist best known for his paintings and prints depicting idyllic rural scenes. Melding Romanticism with Impressionism, Clausen’s work provides a survey of pre and post-World War I English life. Over the course of his career, he developed a more fluent style, portraying movement and the play of sunlight and shade, with flickering brushstrokes. Born on April 18, 1852 in London, United Kingdom, Clausen studied at the South Kensington Schools from 1867–1873. He later studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, under William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He was knighted in 1927, having served as an official war artist in World War I. Clausen died at 92, on November 22, 1944 in Cold Ash, United Kingdom. His works can be found in many important institutions throughout the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and the Dublin City Gallery.
