Item Details
Description
Artist: Pierre-Joseph Redoute (French, 1759-1840). Engraver: Claude-Marie-Francois Dien (French, 1787-1865). "Gnaphalium Diosmaefolium" AND Artist: Pierre-Joseph Redoute (French, 1759-1840). Engraver: Louis Jean Allais (French, 1762-1833). "Penaea Mucronata" - two hand-colored engravings, ca. 1817 to 1824. A pair of elegant botanical engravings by the masterful Pierre-Joseph Redoute, each one demonstrating the French taste for pristine style with compositions that allow the viewer to really focus on the beauty and complexity of the plants themselves, free of any settings or backgrounds. Pierre Joseph Redoute was the official court artist for Marie Antionette and later for Empress Josephine. He created 2100 images depicting over 1800 different species, many that were unknown at the time. What's more, the newly invented stipple engraving technique proved to be the ideal medium for Redoute to capture the enchanting qualities of the world's plants and flowers. Size of sheets: 21.25" L x 14.125" W (54 cm x 35.9 cm) Size of mattes: 25" L x 19.5" W (63.5 cm x 49.5 cm)

Pierre Joseph Redoute was born into a family of artists in what we call Belgium today. From an early age, his family recognized his talent and Redoute was encouraged to pursue his art. In time, Redoute became associated with royals, having five queens and empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to the Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise, as pupils or patrons. Although he lived during a turbulent period with many regime changes, Redoute was able to work without interruptions in his career, and created over fifty books on natural history and archeology.
