Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An impressive collection of 19 bracelets hand-carved from white clam shells and iridescent nacre (mother of pearl). All have openings large enough to fit wrists, or possibly the upper arm. The widest band is made from nacre, but the interior opening is quite narrow has four piercings on either side, perhaps to suspend as a child-sized pectoral or pendant. Size of nacre pectoral: 4" Diameter x 1.25" W (10.2 cm x 3.2 cm); largest bracelet: 4.25" L x 0.6" W (10.8 cm x 1.5 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Condition
Loss to band on one as shown, and loss to periphery of large nacre band. Chips, nicks, and natural shell ossification on the rest. Light mineral deposits and earthen encrustations on most. Not recommended for wearing.
