Description
U.S. Colonial Currency, Rhode Island. 4 Shillings. June 29, 1775 (Fr-RI202), Serial #143. This is certainly a RARE note indeed, as the Track & Price census lists just three other examples of this issue (this specimen is new to the census), all of which exhibit problems of one sort or another (as is also the case with the current note). Technically a VF or better that is split in half horizontally and subsequently taped back together on the reverse. Some short edge splits are also noted. Interestingly, one of the signers is Metcalfe Bowler. Bowler was a well respected Rhode Island politician, merchant, and magistrate. He was also at one time one of the wealthiest men in the colony. His wealth was ruined as a result of the Revolution, as his estate was largely plundered by the British occupation of much of Rhode Island in late 1776. He died in 1789 and was always honored as being a great American patriot that sacrificed greatly for Liberty. During the late 1920's however, proof was uncovered of his collaboration as a Tory spy and informant whilst the papers of General Sir Henry Clinton were being catalogued and researched. It is believed that Bowler succumbed to the pressure of seeing his wealth destroyed, and thus worked with the British to prevent further destruction of his property. It is not known however, whether he provided the Loyalists with any useful information, or whether his collaboration was simply a ruse to avoid complete destitution. Est. $120.
